Inventing Board Games

Ludo Board Game
A board game is any game played with a pre-marked surface or board, with counters or pieces that are moved across the board. There are many different types of board games. Some games are simplified simulations of real life. These are popular because they include make-believe and role playing along with the game. Other games are only loosely, or do not at all, try to imitate reality. These include games like chess and checkers and word games , the most popular of which is Scrabble . Trivia games, the most popular of which is Trivial Pursuit , can also be placed in this category
To begin with a board game, the inventor must decide certain things.
He/she must decide on the:
· Object of the game: Decide how the game is won. · Equipment: What is necessary to play the game. (Game board, die, cards, etc.) · Set up: How do you set up the starting position of the board? How do you decide who takes the first turn? · Rules of play: How does a player move around the board? Are there penalties for wrong answers? How many players can play?
More specifically, the board game inventor must:
1. Design and make a board game. Use cardboard, tag board, construction paper, or file folders. Decorate the board with art that relates to the theme or subject of the game. There should be a START and FINISH box connected by spaces. Label one half of these spaces FACTS and one half OPINION, or other information that he/she decides on.
2. Make up questions that relate to the subject of the game. PRINT them neatly on small squares of paper. Divide the questions equally between FACT and OPINION (or other information that the group has decided on). Write the type of question (FACT, OPINION, OTHER) on the back of each question card. Number each set of cards.
3. On a sheet of lined paper, write the answers to the factual questions. Glue this paper to a piece of construction paper and label it ANSWERS.
4. Make up the rules for playing the game. Decide what each player must do to go from the start line to the finish line. Write out the rules of the game. Identify what a player must do to win the game.
Check that you understand what this word means in this document Simulation: imitation.
