On November 10th, 2002 the sailing ship "Kyrenia-Eleftheria" (Kyrenia - Freedom) was launched from Cyprus. The Kyrenia-Eleftheria is a replica of the ancient Kyrenia ship. The 4th century B.C. shipwreck was found off the Kyrenia coast in 1965. It is now under UNESCO supervision in the castle of the town of Kyrenia, Cyprus.

The main purpose of building the Kyrenia-Eleftheria was to carry Cypriot copper to Greece where it was used to forge the bronze medals for 2004 Athens Olympic Games. This is part of Cyprus’ contribution to the Cultural Olympiad.

The launching followed ancient Greek tradition. Libations were offered to the gods Poseidon and Aeolos who watched over the original vessel over 2,000 years ago. The Kyrenia-Eleftheria was then loaded with a cargo of copper and other Cypriot products.
