DUSSELDORF, Germany, Tuesday, November 5th, 2001 - The average German ate 84.8 kilos of bread last year, keeping the country firmly at the top of the European Union consumption chart, the head of Germany's large bakeries association said on Tuesday. "The historic reason for this is probably the very wide variety of bread types we have in our country".
Andreas Lang told News Alert that association figures showed per capita bread consumption in the EU was 66.85 kilos last year, with Luxembourg at the bottom of the list with 50 kilos. Ireland and Spain in the middle field with 65 and 67 kilos, respectively, and Denmark second with 74 kilos. "In Russia, for example, where bread is still a politically sensitive staple food and subsidised, annual consumption is around 120 kilos".
