Disappearance of Flight 19

One of the most famous disappearances is Flight 19.
On December 5, 1945, five US Navy planes mysteriously vanished while on a routine trip. The Captain kept in contact on the radio until nothing could be heard. The rescue plane that was sent afterwards to search for them never came back either. In total, six aircraft and twenty seven men disappeared without a trace. Did Flight 19 simply crash into the Atlantic Ocean or did something more mysterious happen? And where did the rescue plane go?
