Michael Cacoyannis

Michael Cacoyannis was born in Limassol, Cyprus in 1922. He studied Law and Dramatic Arts in London. During the war he worked for the BBC (Greek service) first as a news announcer and then as a producer of cultural programmes until 1951.He began his career in drama by working as an actor and a director for the English stage. He moved to Athens in 1952 having decided to give up acting and concentrate on directing for the screen as well as the stage.

Cacoyannis' films were the first independent Greek productions to attract international attention. He made "Windfall" in Athens (1954), "Stella" (1955), "The Girl in Black" (1956), "A Matter of Dignity" (1958). He was the first Greek director ever to achieve international recognition. He went on to make the films: "Our Last Spring" (1960), "The Wastrel" (1961) brought to the screen Euripides' "Electra" (1962). His film production of Nikos Kazantzakis"Zorba the Greek" (1964) was a huge movie success worldwide. It won six Oscar nominations and three Oscars.

His other films include “The Day the Fishes Came Out” (1967), two further tragedies: “The Trojan Women” (1971) and “Iphigenia” (1976), a documentary about the plight of Cyprus ,"Attila '74", “Sweet Country” (1986) and his most recent film “Up, Down and Sideways” (1992). His movie adaptation of Anton Chekov’s, “The Cherry Orchard” won the Hellenic Ministry of Culture 1999 National Film Awards for Best Cinematography, Best Set Design, and Best Costume Design.
